Connecting kids with books they love to nurture reader identities - at home & in the classroom.
Our Programs
Through our partnerships with local elementary schools, NBC targets individual student literacy needs by growing home libraries full of meaningful, intentional curated, diverse books in under-served communities. NBC books offer windows and mirrors for young readers to feel seen and see others.
Our approach is personalized, collaborative, student-centered and data-driven. NBC works hard to match the readers with books “right” for them. Participating in our programs allows students to:
Feel seen and represented in literature
Deepen their understanding of themselves and others
Grow their home libraries
Develop reading confidence and motivation
When our team helps students voice their reading interests and needs, we see growth in their reading confidence, motivation, and enjoyment.
School Partnership Program
Book Carts
NBC brings reading excitement to students with a mobile Book Cart experience. Trained volunteers roll colorful carts of new books (curated for diversity, meaning, and relevancy) to classrooms and work one-on-one with students, discussing interests and guiding them through options. Students take home a new book every week for 6 weeks. These books are theirs to keep forever.
Virtual Book Requests
Following the Book Cart experience, students receive digital/print content that builds upon reader identity concepts. NBC shares suggested book titles and topics with student who then have the opportunity to request 3 - 4 new books throughout the semester. We deliver requests with personalized handwritten notes from an NBC adult on each book, showcasing our student-centered commitment.
NBC Classroom Program
NBC provides resources to support our educator partners through the school year. Resources include books for classroom libraries as well as read-aloud and classroom activities that develop reader identities.
