Connecting kids with books they love to nurture reader identities - at home & in the classroom.

Volunteer Opportunities

How to get involved

Behind-the-Scenes Book Prep

Behind-the-scenes work sets the stage for successful in-person days working with students. We depend on volunteers to help enter book titles into NBC’s online database, unpack and organize inventory by genre, and prep books for the Book Carts. Book Prep volunteers also get a sneak peek at some of the newest and best titles in children’s lit today!

Book Cart Volunteer

For six weeks, NBC visits partner schools with mobile book carts stocked with new, diverse, and meaningful books for young readers (K-5th graders). Volunteers engage with students one-on-one to help them select books they would like to read and take home to keep. School visit days are filled with smiles, laughter, and excitement and offer a perfect opportunity to connect with young readers and spread excitement for a love of books and reading.

Classroom Captain / School Liaison

At the start of each school visit, the Classroom Captain meets with each class to make connections between students and NBC. This is an opportunity for outgoing, enthusiastic individuals to greet students, review “the plan” for how to choose books at the Book Carts, offer some book recommendations, deliver fulfilled book requests and share the special excitement students feel during an NBC visit. NBC is also interested in developing School Liaisons to connect with our partner schools in exciting, new capacities.

Community Outreach Representative

NBC is always trying to raise awareness of our work in the community, strengthen our existing community partnerships and explore ways of partnering with other literacy change-makers in the community. Coordination, partnership, and networking speak to the vibe in Nashville’s non-profit space, and NBC is always looking for innovative, creative individuals to help us connect with other organizations to supply what’s needed for our students, teachers, and school communities.

NBC Moments

NBC is creating video content to spark classroom conversations about books and reader identity. We need enthusiastic faces—and voices—to get kids excited about reading. If you are up for being in front of the camera, this job is for you!

Book notes

Connecting with students around reading is central to the NBC Model. When we’re not working in-person with students, we maintain one-on-one relationships through personalized letters to students. Each requested book we deliver includes a personalized Book Note message from an NBC grownup. This is a great way to volunteer on your own time! You can write notes in bed, on the plane, in the carpool line—anywhere!

DeliverING Book Requests

If you like giving out gifts to kids and being the favorite person in the room, sign up to deliver book requests. We need volunteers to visit classrooms and deliver books (with their Book Notes) to students.
